Step 1: The Exhibition
Questions about the exhibit:

Exhibition in honor of Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Impressionism.
Step 2: The Gallery
Questions about the physical space:1. What type of lighting is used?
Dim lighting, each work is lit by an individual light directed at the art work.
2. What colors are used on the walls?
Each room was a different color to match the theme of the art. Colors used were light blue, navy, pink, green
3. What materials are used in the interior architecture of the space?
The architecture surrounding the art pieces has elements that add to the atmosphere that the paintings create.
4. How is the movement of the viewer through the gallery space?
Each room is a different experience as the color of the walls and the theme of the paintings create a unique experience.
Step 3: The Artwork
Questions about the artwork:1. How are the artworks organized?
They are organized by artists.
2. How are the artrworks similar?
They share the theme of impressionism.
3. How are the artworks different?
Some are portraits, some are landscapes, some are statues.
4. How are the artworks framed?
They were framed in gold ornamented frames.
5. How are the artworks identified and labeled?
The artworks are identified and labeled by a note next to the artwork indicating the artist, origin, title, year, and sometimes a short description.
6. What is the proximity of the artwork to each other?
They are a few feet apart.
Step 4: Art Criticism Exercise
Select three of the artworks from the show and use the Art Criticism worksheet to describe, analyze, bracket and interpret the work using the 5-step Art Criticism Process described
John Singer Sargent, "Madame Paul Poirson", 1885
Singer manages to capture the character and gentleness of his subject with thin brush strokes and bright colors, creating a calm atmosphere.
Edouard Vuillard, "The Painter Ker-Xavier Roussel and His Daughter", 1903
Vuillard depicts his brother-in-law Roussel and his daughter in a sunlit room. He creates the warm atmosphere by using warm colors such as yellow, orange and red.
Willard,Leroy Metcalf, "The White Veil",1909
Metcalf uses monochromatic colors to depict a winter landscape. He uses different shades on white and grey for the majority of the painting with some dark green for the trees.
Step 5: Document Your Visit
What did you think of visiting the Gallery and purposefully looking at the exhibition from a different perspective - the physical space, the architecture, theme, etc.?
It was interesting to observe how they chose to organize and group artworks, and how they chose the environment to present them in.
