Project #5

1. Use the vocabulary you have learned in class to describe this artwork or performance in detail.
"Guernica" is a monochrome painting done in black, white, and shades of grey. Picasso makes use of sharp lines and shapes to depict the subjects of the painting. By presenting the subjects of the painting through deformed shapes the artist reinforces the idea of pain and suffering present in the artwork.
2. What processes were used to create this work? What social influences might the artist be responding to and why?
Picasso created this artwork as a political statement in response to the Nazi's devastating casual bombing practice on the Basque town of Guernica during Spanish Civil War. It shows the pain and suffering of the civilians affected by it.
3. What is the relationship of this work to the time and society in which it was created? Describe the symbols used to express this relationship.
"Guernica" is a political statement against the Nazi's bombing practice in Guernica. It is a symbol of protest and keeps the memory of the tragedy alive. The bull and the horse are important characters in Spanish culture and I think they serve as a symbol indicating towards the tragedy in Guernica.
4. Identify elements in the work that evoke a persuasive or emotional response. Be specific about what those responses are and why.
Most of the faces presented in the painting show an emotion of fear and pain. They are depicted with an open mouth and hands flailing around, or raised up. The character on the right side of the painting is running while leaning in front with their hands hanging down which can show fear and exhaustion.
5. Evaluate what you perceive to be the strengths and weaknesses of the work.  Apply discipline specific vocabulary and concepts when describing your point of view.
I think the strengths of the painting are the symbolism that helps the viewer understand better what the painting is trying to portray, the monochromatic palette that creates an eerie atmosphere and the use of undefined shapes that represent the people and animals in the painting.
