Module 5
A.) Which artworks make an impact or impression on me? Why?
One of the art pieces that impressed me is called "This is not a fountain" by Subodh Gupta, from the new exposition called "We the People". This piece was created in 2011-13 and it is made up of old aluminum utensils, water, painted brass taps, PVC pipes, and a motor. The artist collected the pots and pans from families all over India, and their accumulated dents and scratches speak speak about the economic reality and daily lives of their former owners. Gathered in a pile as if discarded by many people at once they also represent the ongoing migration in the country from rural to more urban areas.
This piece impressed me with its unconventional media and the scale of the whole piece. It occupies the center area of a very large hall and it's the main piece in the room.
Another piece that impressed me was titled "Le feu d'artifice" (Fireworks), by James Ensor. The Painting was created in 1887, it is oil and encaustic on canvas, and it's size is 40 1/4 x 44 1/4 inches.
This piece left an impression on me with its use of colors and the scale and proportion of the fireworks compared to everything around it. The first time I looked at it I was drawn to the bright fireworks and then I noticed the small people on the bottom half of the painting, making the fireworks look enormous.
B.) Which artworks do I feel a connection with? Why?
I felt a connection with Rene Magritte's "La Voix des Airs" (The voice of space). This piece was made in 1928 with oil on canvas. I felt a connection with this piece because I love the universe. It is such a big mystery and I think this paining represents it well. After reading about it I found out that the mysterious objects were inspired by the bells hung on horses' collars, and the slits represent the artist's obsession with concealment and the mystery of human experience.
The second piece that I felt a connection with is called "La Vie Paysanne" (Peasant Life). It was made in 1925 by Marc Chagall with oil on canvas. The reason I feel a connection with this painting is because it reminds me of my times visiting my grandparents in the countryside. I was close to animals, spent time with other villagers, went to local festivals and it felt very isolated from the life I had in the city.
C.) Which artworks would I like to know more about? Why?
One of the artworks I would like to know more about is called "Elke-Akt 2"(Elk-Nude 2). It was made by Georg Baselitz in 1976 with oil on canvas. I would like to know why the artist chose to paint the subject of his work upside down.
Another artworks that I want to know more about is called "Monsieur Plume piece botanique (portrait d'Hentri Michaux)". It was made by Jean Debuffet in 1946 with oil and mixed media on wood. What got me interested in this work is that judging by its name this is a portrait, but it's also a caricature. I would like to know the artist's view and relations with the person in the portrait and find out why he portrays them in such way.
